Cádiz is a truly beautiful Andalusia city in southwestern Spain. It enjoys a stunning setting as it’s a peninsula, so there’s sea on virtually all sides. As you’ll probably have gathered from recent posts, we went there for a little day trip last weekend, as it’s only an hour’s (and a bit) drive from Algeciras, where Maria and I were staying.

I usually finish off with food, but we’ve already had that in a previous post, and so, for a change, the last word goes to fashion. Rather unwise fashion (in my opinion), though colourful it is…
WHO, I ask you, in their right mind, would wear something as hideous as this?? And on WHAT occasion? I’m totally baffled…

Not being a landlubber I can’t say I don’t wish I’d’ve gotten a job in a coastal city instead of Madrid. I would’ve been happier by the sea. These buildings remind me of Istanbul though. What made Istanbul cool was being able to travel most places by ferry. And the big Princes’ Island didn’t allow automobiles at all. Travel there was by foot or horse draw. It was great.

That does sound cool 🙂 Though not sure I’d want to live in Turkey… they’ve got some serious crap going on right now. Aw, the sea.. eventually, I’m going to live by the sea. Probably Portugal.

There is a lot going on. Turkey’s entered what were our 60s. This president is actually another dictator. The place is loaded with history – there’s just so much there.
I lived there for almost 2 years. My son is still there. I can’t say I’d mind if he left.

I see! Very interesting. I’ve never been to Turkey, and I can’t say it attracts me as a destination. I’d go if I had a concrete reason (visiting a friend or something like that), and I’m sure I’d enjoy some of it, seeing as the food is meant to be good 😉

I was teaching there – ESL. It was the first ‘other’ country I was employed. I went to Italy after that, back to the States, to Madrid for 13 months and then to Istanbul again. By that time it was one of my homes.
My son was teaching there too, met someone – how life gets complicated – then was invited by a few of his students who were business partners to work for their company. He got married and still works with them.
And so life goes on.

OK, now I have to put this city on my official list of Places I Want To Visit. I love the colorful tile work in the one photo of the hallway. Is this area known for its special ceramic tiles?

Not particularly…though you’ll find beautiful tile work all over Spain, and especially in the Southern half of the country.

I was right to have Cadiz on my “go back to” list then. I’m a big fan of Malaga too, so I’m feeling a southern trip coming on in the next year or so.

Cádiz was/is one of my favourite cities in Spain (even though I did not pay attention to the bathing beauties…;) ).

And I bought a pair of shoes there I still have! (Well, they have heals, so it’s not likely that they will get worn out. But I bought a pair of shoes with high heels there, that is, while backpacking. Clever…)

from what I remember the Spanish don't have the same elegance in fashion that the French and Italians have, and as for childrenswear… oh, boy!

This is the bizarre thing about it… Spanish women, generally, dress very well, and they really know how to dress up their kids, they are super-cute (and I don’t even like kids!). So, I’ve no idea who this monstrosity of a dress could possibly be aimed at!

As for Cádiz, I had a hairdresser in Boston who was from Cádiz, and she was a riot. Alas, got married to a Lebanese and is now eating dates on the beach in Beirut.
