As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I spent last weekend in Salamanca, a town with more history than you can shake a stick at. There will be photos of stunning buildings etc. in due course, but – and this will surprise no one(!) – I’m putting the food pics up first:
Let’s start with a round of pinchos, which is essentially the same as tapas.
The one in the middle is called “jeta”. It’s a colloquial word for face (as in “mug”). As for the dis itself, it’s pork snout, oink! 🙂
But what Salamanca is most famous for in the food stakes is this:
Jamón!!!
And here’s the nice man cutting some for us 🙂 Pricey stuff, but so worth it…
This burger was divine…
Nice wine display 🙂
Who’d turn down such an evocative invite for afternoon coffee?
Not me!
Chochos Tipicos de Salamanca
“Chocho” has two meanings: sweets/candy and… erm… fanny (beaver, if you’re American).
OMG empanadas I diiiiiiiiiiiiie. I need food so badly today. I worked till 2 am, then again since 8 am and I treated myself to a massive sushi lunch delivered to my office and I ordered THE WRONG EFFING THING >.<
Anyway. Thank you for this. I am devouring everything with my eyes.

Oh no…. was the wrong sushi palatable, at least…?

Man, I miss jamón! We didn’t get to eat in Salamanca as we couldn’t find anywhere to park! I’m sorry I missed the opportunity – everything looks amazing. Drool…

Not as much as you think, I bet. I managed a palm-sized piece (though I was also stuffing myself with other things at the time).

You’re definitely selling Salamanca to me:-) The pig snouts look a tinsy bit wrong but the coffee looks lush. Also the translations/double meaning of the names of the dishes made me smile:-)

Hi there! There’s plenty of non-snouty pork parts to choose from, have no fear 😉
Salamanca is great. I’ve got some more picture posts coming up, in case you’re not fully convinced yet. Ha!

By the way… “fanny” and “beaver” are synonyms? I don’t think they’re slang for the same body part… Hmmmmmmm…

In the UK, fanny = cunt. In the US, fanny = ass. Clear enough? 😉

I say… Conversations with you are always brief but educational. I had no idea that “fanny” was such a moveable body part. 😛
But your definition does lead to another question: is the word “cunt” in the UK not a very offensive term? (Since “fag” British English is quite innocuous, maybe there are others!)

You’re right. “Fanny” is far less offensive than the “c” word, so they are not really synonymous in usage, although they are slang for the same body part.
Re, “fag” – it does indeed have the same meaning in UK and US English, BUT it’s also a UK slang word for cigarette, and, in this context, not viewed as offensive in the least.
