On Friday, the vagaries of the Bavarian weather dealt me a lucky hand. My friend Martina called me in the morning, asking if I fancied going to the Kaltenberg Knights’ Tournament that evening. She had two tickets, but her husband couldn’t go. He had to do the threshing before the rain showers, predicted for early next day, would turn the fields too soggy for fieldwork.
I said yes, of course 🙂
Kaltenberg is a small village not far from mine, with a magnificent castle dating from 1292, owned by the last Bavarian King’s great-grandson. Once a year, the grounds are home to a fantastic spectacle: The Knights’ Tournament, surrounded by a medieval market, workshops, food and, of course, tons of people in costume.
I think took hundreds of photos… and I don’t usually post that many in one go, but I do hope you enjoy the colourful splendidness of it all 🙂
Let’s start with some food:
Looks a lot like our RenFest. great photos!!

yes indeedy. are there any of these festivals in Spain? seems I googled once….but can’t recall if I found anything.

There must be…they have fiesta after fiesta…

that was my thinking as well 🙂

Whoa! The medieval fair in Alcala de Henares has nothing on this knight’s shin-dig!

Kaltenberg charges quite a princely sum for admission… the cheapest tickets are €25, so they have to offer something that’s worth seeing.

That looks completely brilliant! And you’ve got some great shots. Now I fancy wild boar for lunch…

You’d enjoy that 🙂

Get thee a camera fair maiden! 😉
Too many great pics (and ahem one that could be even blurrier!)… that dragon seems to be hanging on for dear life! Amused by the shiny belly button… the latest 1299 fashion perhaps?
Hey could you send a few of those knights in shinning armour over to rescue this damsel from her technology distress??

Now that’s a photo essay! I was a bit disturbed by the boar – I prefer my pork just a tad more processed!
What’s in the top sandwich?

The sandwich… bits of boar (processed!), carrots, cabbage, onions, garlic and herb sauce 🙂

did you get to try some boar? I like all the medieval and generally historically themed fairs and re-enactments, and this one seems to have been a real fun

Wild boar is a standard menu item in all Bavarian restaurants 🙂 There was some in my sandwich!

dang it, I want some too. All we get is bacon. Sometimes even a hole roasted piglet or a big pig, but haven’t heard of boar being served (except for a very fancy and quite pricey ‘hunting’ themed restaurant in the Old Town of Vilnius), but I doubt some would call what we have got here proper bacon. Well, Linda (expat eye on Latvia) certainly does not think that we here in the Baltics got any bacon worth to be called bacon at all)

She’s very particular about her pork products, that one 😉
I guess if you don’t have any native wild boar left in the Baltics, then that’s why there’s nowt in the restaurants. We still have some down here.

oh, we have boars, but I doubt if they’ll be roaming the forests for long now since there’s some virus (African pig plague) spreading around fast, so probably hunters will get a licence to kill ’em all 😦 So chances of me tasting any boar locally shall become even slimmer

Ah yes, African swine fever… I’ve read about that… it’s very regrettable 😦

I love the Germanic knights! And the raggedy king. It looks like his crown is made of kitchen spoons, and he’s holding a giant spatula as a scepter!

His wife is going to be chuffed… let’s hope she hadn’t planned on making soup for dinner!

This is amazing! Though instead of the knight in shining armor, just give me the sword. I’ll go fight off dragons myself 😛

1. That ‘little’ snack made me drool a little. Yuuuum.
2. There was certainly a lot of… man… on display at that fair. Um. No. I don’t even have a stupid comment for that one. The pictures have done it for me.

Yes, men can’t seem to wait to get a ‘legit’ reason to get naked (or nearly naked) – and the more ‘mangled/mangy’ they are, the more they seem to like it. What strange creatures…

I spied the board for Nine Man Morrris – world’s oldest board game – the far one. The near one I can’t figure out with them playing with only black stones. Love the lizard – oops, I mean dragon – sculpture . Wish we’d gotten to see the castle. I figure the income from the annual fair just about covers the cost of repairs, maintenance, taxes and insurance for the year:I wish the great-grandson well. Thanks for sharing your very fun day with us.

The roasted pig’s heads were quite startling. I admit I’ve never been to a pig roast … but I would love to try it!

Roast pork is not my fave, I must admit. I had it every Sunday when I was a kid, and ended up hating it. I’m OK with it again now, but only after avoiding it for many, many years.
