Look Up Look Down: Passau “Toy Town”

On Wednesday, my mum, my brother and I went on a little outing to Passau, a city in Eastern Lower Bavaria, about two hours drive away. The settlement that would eventually become Passau has been in existence since the 2nd century BC, and it makes the perfect entry for travelwithintent’s weekly Look Up Look Down photo challenge.

Passau is known as the “city of the three rivers”, because it’s where the Ilz and the Inn join one of Europe’s greatest rivers, the Danube. At the point where the rivers unite, the water is two different colours, because one carries much more sediment than the others:

The Danube is much darker than the Inn

Does it look like this in “real life”, we wondered, or just on the “official” board put up for tourists? It was hard to tell at ground level, so we decided to make our way all the way up to the fortification and take a good look from above.

You can definitely tell!

From our lofty vantage point, Passau did look like a toy town.

There’ll be more on Passau, and on its FOOD in subsequent posts 🙂

Put it on your list – with any luck, there’ll be a direct train from Berlin 🙂 It’s just at the border with Austria and the Czech Republic, so you could hop across.

And it does that! There was a devastating flood only a few years ago, and many shops had not re-opened, leaving one street, which should have been a prime shopping street, effectively derelict.

Passau does look like a charming “toy” town. I love the peaked red and brown roofs. Is it mostly vacationers/tourists, or is it a thriving town in its own right?

Hope you’re having a great holiday. Now, let’s get to the cake!

Years ago, we went to Passau on our way home from a car rally….sad to say, we didn’t spend long there. Should’ve gone up to the vantage point like you did, great views! 🙂

The two-toned river is remarkable! And I just love the photos from above. There is no place anywhere in N.America that approximates this, which is why I adore traveling to Europe. Well, that plus the food. 🙂

Oh there are plenty of beautiful spots in nature here in NA; I’m talking about the architecture. When your oldest building is only a couple of centuries old… well, you know.

Yes, on the architecture front, you’ve not got a leg to stand on 😉 Although, technically, Mexico is part of NA, and those Aztec/Mayan(?) constructions are impressive as hell.

Good catch! I’m clearly in a USA/Canada, centre of the universe, mindset.

The Mayan ruins I saw at Chichen Itza and Tulum were very, very impressive.
