The Quirky Streets Of Passau. And The Food!

After yesterday’s bird’s eye perspective of the beautiful Bavarian city of Passau, today’s mission is to get down to street level. AND, most important of all, to show my food-adoring audience what we gorged ourselves on. If you can’t wait even a second longer – the cake’s at the very end 🙂

But let’s start with a bit of glamour. Passau has it:

Golden Dogs in Passau

The streets may not be paved with gold, but the dogs certainly make up for it.

How about a touch of the exotic? Here's an innovative display in a spice shop.

How about something (im)practical? This giant rucksack will accommodate three four-year-olds and a kitchen sink.

Now here's an original shoe shop display :)

I think this is my favourite photo, the pink church makes the perfect backdrop 🙂

Passau Statue

Statue of writer and poet Emerenz Meier, born 1874 near Passau, died 1928 in Chicago. There was a touching poem on the plaque below, which made the point that, had she not been lumbered with female domestic responsibilities, she would probably have been as famous as Goethe or Schiller.

OK. You’ve made it to this point, so you’ve earned yourself a hearty meal. And CAKE!

huh, that’s something new to me. I’ve never seen a golden retriever this literary golden. Did those (most probably Russian) ladies took it for a walk or something?
And I’m blaming you for a Doberman sized drool pool on my floor… Where do one gets cake this good at 11pm?

That golden doggie belonged to the shop in front… I wish I’d taken a picture of the golden gnome in the window!

I recommend a weekend break in Passau. It’s small, and walkable, and it seemed like there was great food everywhere 🙂

Well I loved the chicken! I wish we had one just like it at the beginning of our driveway. And I was taken with the story of Emerenz Meier – so looked her up in Wikipedia, there is nearly nothing there. So glad in the days of the blog, women’s voices can be widely published, and “household burdens” can be reduced to “eating cake”

That sure is one fine chicken, and it would have a rollicking ol’ time in Fiji 🙂

I don’t think EM’s works have been translated into other languages… but I could be wrong.

The churches, street scenes and other pics look sumptuous! The tower pic (see the water line in the flood?) below Ms Meier tells us much about that city’s history, dependence on the rivers, etc…

Actually, spaghetti is always singular, never plural – though I hadn’t thought of it. e.g. the spaghetti IS better than the salad “Spaghetti” alone refers to a plate of -, serving of – package of – OR (sorry to gross us out) can of – Plural would be “spaghetti noodles” , e.g. the spaghetti noodles ARE stuck together again.. If I’d paid more attention in grammar class I would have the fancy terminology to explain it with.

My favorite is the one with someone’s nose on the right side of the photo.
The last one with your brother going down the winding road is also great…. love the sign on the top left. What does it say?

Nothing like a big red cock in the foreground of a photo to make it stand out. That one is my favourite, too! Do I also see a chocolate éclair in the cake selection? Those are my favourites!

Oh boy, my heart took a little break when I saw the giant backpack and I heard a little whisper say: you need to pack lighter! Lucky even my heart understood it wasn’t there for me to carry, so I’ll live. Phew.

I was thinking to myself ‘what a very strange place’ till I got to your cathedral shots. They are really beautiful! The apricot strudel doesn’t look too bad, either 🙂

You see, I’m trying not to overdo it with shots of historic buildings, there are so many peppered across the interwebs already… I’m more of a fan of ‘street shots’, but it’s tricky to get good ones, as it’s all in the timing. And my timing is crap 😉

I would like you to know that I restrained myself. I did not jump ahead to the end.
    The cathedral ceiling is lovely.

Now for my favorite photo of all: Apricot-quark strudel! It looks divine. Please tell me that it tasted as good as it looked.

PS – I wonder if the golden dog is anything like the golden goose who laid golden eggs. HA.

IT WAS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKED! We picked that café by chance, and it seems they’ve won loads of prizes for their creations. Well deserved, as far as we could tell 🙂

You could dye Reggie… now that would confuse Little Kitty 😉

Mmmmmmmmmh, lovely food! And the two oldie schickimickis – you see that all the time. Every available piece of jewellery on, impossible shoes and many Tueten! 🙂

Wow PASSAU looks great! You are making Bavaria more and more appealing 🙂 The vergetable bake looks yummy. And the quark studel looks divine. What is that long chocolate thing? What is inside of it? We have something similar here: it has chocolate inside and it is called deer tounge.

ok – so obviously I’m still trying to play catch up with reading blog posts. In case you’re keeping score, I’m losing.
What can I say? Your pictures are always amazing but today you outdid yourself. All I can say is – Wow! I’d be hard-pressed to say which one I liked best … the amazing indoor shot of the cathedral ceiling? … or the funky fence posts with the pink church in the background? Is that a cat with binoculars?
I shouldn’t, however, have read this post before dinner. Your mom’s plate with the vegetable bake made me drool!!
