Yesterday, I posted a bunch of pictures of the beautiful Bavarian city of Landshut (click here if you’ve missed them), so most of you will already be well prepared for what’s coming today: We’re schlepping up the hill to gawp at (and down from) the castle, Burg Trausnitz.
This thing was built in 1204. The Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria for hundreds of years, had its main seat in Landshut for a while, so Castle Trausnitz was ramshackle full of medieval splendour, art and culture. “Was” is the operative word here, because, unfortunately, there was a fire in 1961, which destroyed most of the building and its contents. Cause: faulty electrical wiring. Oh, the (sad) irony…
Anyway, the (rebuilt) place is still pretty impressive, and makes a worthy entry for travelwithintent’s weekly Look Up, Look Down photo challenge 🙂
Most definitely a worthy entry! The views down are great, but I especially like the fools’ staircase. Glad you sneaked that shot. Do you know why fools?

I think it’s the staircase that the court jesters, other entertainers and the staff were using…

I wondered if it was that kind of fool. They were lucky to have such a nice staircase.

You can’t really go much wrong with Bavarian towns. They’ve managed to re-build them all, rather than creating a disastrous eyesore like, for example, Coventry.

Oh, that place… I’ve just passed through it on the train but I think I saw enough!

Love your sneaky photo too – but what has made me smile the most is your conversation with Expat Eye! Coventry indeed!

Because I lived in the Midlands for a while. Leamington Spa, to be precise.

Were you there before it opened! Nobody in a single pic! Super! And yes, most Bavarian towns will do. Think Mühldorf or Dingolfing…

It was a quiet day, mid-week. Always best to avoid weekends for this kind of thing.
Re. Bavarian towns: I’m from Fürstenfeldbruck, which wouldn’t draw any tourists, but it’s still pretty presentable. Right now, I live in Castilla-La Mancha, where most of the smaller towns are really quite ugly. NOT Toledo, though, where I actually live – it’s totally beautiful.

I just love castles. Can’t have too many of them.
I too really like the staircase of fools. It looks like it’s all painted in fresco. Very beautiful.

I think the paintings are still the originals…

Nice pics! that white building wasn’t built in 12hundred something, I’m sure. I like that steeple. Is that clock actually visible from the ground?
LikeLike
Yes, you can see the clock face from ground level. Just about. With a bit of squinting 😉

Hmm, so you can see the face. But can you tell the time? Or do you rely on the bells? I wonder now. When was the 24 hour thing invented? Didn’t Copernicus or the gold-nosed Tycho Brahe invent our system much later ? In the 1500s? I gotta look that up now.

Of course I can tell the time!!!! 😉
