I was walking past one of my favourite Muswell Hill bakeries today for the first time in three years. Its hallmark used to be a delicious tray of freshly baked cheesecake gracing the window. Well, it seems that standards have slipped abominably since I left town three years ago:
On a more positive note, I’ve had the most fabulous day, meeting up with a number of pals and flitting from one cake paradise to another in the process.
I spent the afternoon in Marylebone, where I used to live as a student (oh sweet nostalgia…) with local resident Karolyn. She is the author of one of my favourite blogs, Distant Drumlin, and one of the most lovely people on earth.
You’ve subsisted totally on cake today!

Not quite… I’ve had eggs on toast with fried mushrooms and tomato for brekkie. Yah!

I think, for the sake of your readers, you should eat one of those cheesecakes, and report back with your findings.

They are NOT cheesecakes, but cheap imposters!

cheese puff pastries? they seem like cousins of the russian pastries, so I am all over that

There’s no cheese in them… they’ve just left the cheesecake sign there by mistake 😦

I love this post because it’s the first time I’ve seen a picture of you!! Hi!!

And that’s only happened coz Karolyn bullied the waitress into taking one! Glad she did 🙂

It really is fun when you can meet up with a fellow blogger you know and like. I’ve done this twice so far. I am sorry about those cheese cake fakes. I would have been as disappointed as you were!

I’ve done it three times, and it’s always been great 🙂 I had two cakes yesterday (three, in fact, seeing as two of them were half-cakes), so that alleviated my distress somewhat.

We chose wisely – no strange cheeseblobs at Patisserie Valerie, just tasty strawberry milllefeuille.

And you can’t go much wrong with jam doughnuts, I find 😉 Thanks for a fabulous outing 🙂

I find it FANTASTIC that you two know each other in person! Maybe I’ll get to read about the meet-up twice this way :). Gives me hope that the two of you will pop up in Fiji sometime as well. …. So …. what’dcha talk about?

In fact, we were talking about you and your fabulous blog – your ears must have been burning 😉 Plus a few rants about bad spelling and grammar (not yours, lol).
And we’d love nothing more than a cake outing in Fiji…

Great picture of you two, but what about the strawberry millefeuille? Actually, I would have settled for eggs on toast with mushrooms and tomatoes. So British 🙂
As for the impostor cheesecakes, if I owned a bakery, that’s the last thing I would put in the window.

Karolyn was too fast for me to take a pic of the millefaffery thing 😉
They just aren’t aesthetically pleasing, are they?!

Aw, such a cute pic! Of you and Karolyn – not those bloody weird-looking cakes 😉

If those are really cheesecakes, they are some sorry-looking ones. Good to know that you got your fill of (hopefully prettier) cakes in other bakeries though!

Oh those are sad little cheesecakes. Or paper weights. I’m not sure. But wonderful to see friends regardless.
I hope to have some food porn for you in a few weeks when I’m back from vacay. 🙂

They are not cheesecakes. The cheesecake usually sits there, but not that day, they put these pathetic turds there and forgot to remove the cheesecake sign.
Can’t wait for your pics 🙂
