London Cakes and Brekkies

I’ve had complaints. Several, in fact. About the dearth of food pictures from my very recent London trip. I want to assure you all that I did, in fact, eat. Morning, noon and night. And in between. Everything in sight. Especially Asian food (which is hard to come by in Toledo) and, of course, CAKES.

I wasn’t as conscientious as usual about taking food photos, but I did come away with some. Here’s a selection:

An adventurous Chelsea bun, with blueberries and pistachio topping, devoured in a new cafe in East Finchley. My friend had a delicious chocolate almond cake.

Brazilian Cake

At a Brazilian café in Cleveland Street. And yes, the board with the cake AND the chocolate truffle was mine 🙂

Doughnuts

I just had to home in on those jam doughnuts on the bottom right… and they were every bit as delicious as they look.

Let’s finish off with some breakfasts for those of you who prefer savoury fare. After all, this is what the UK is famous for 🙂

I felt slightly sick looking at the cakes (I loathe cakes and dessert). I looked forward to the savouries… That ham for eggs benedict looks like pink plastic. The hollandaise looks like dishwater. I prefer eggs florentine anyway. Much better combination. I wouldn’t eat the scrambled egg meal either, just doesn’t look appetising. The poached eggs on the last one don’t look bad, but the rest of it looks awful. Those watery baked beans? 😦 undercooked sausage, bacon with rind on?

But I have an issue with breakfasts anyway!

mmmm – and the window shot of the bakery is cool – also the close up of the jam doughnuts was perfect – not just to highlight a classic that si simple and gets overlooked sometimes – but your photo lets us feel the sugar – and I swear I can almost taste it – reminds me of some yesterday memory when these were always last to go in an assorted box – ha! mmm

Bacon, sausages and hashbrowns for breakfast. No eggs, please! Eggs and I decided to part ways many years ago. They make my tummy hurt. Bacon is a must. Bacon makes everythig better.

Not much into desserts, but there is something weird about those jam-doughnuts…. why are they leering at me like that?

Um, the one I had on my first morning here was pretty good – no bacon though 😦 I’ll keep searching! Brunch is probably more realistic than breakfast though… 😉

I wish I could be your companion mouse – ride along in your pocket and nibble at the bits you decide kindly to toss. I would take any, but especially hope for a bit of any of those brekkies.

Well, I definitely noticed it. I’m not sure I liked it. Of a morning, I usually feel that sausages should stay modestly out of sight and not be putting themselves forward. An occasional appearance is tolerable as long as the sausage in question is vegetarian 🙂

Yeah looks like a trip I went on last year to Europe.

Actually I have to say when I see your pics, I do feel my blood sugar rise. then I move to another blog on the reader and everything goes back to normal.

    Just saying…

I had to save this post for a time when I could fully savor the lovely cakes and doughnuts. I hope they were as delicious as they look, especially the Chelsea bun with pistachios. I love pistachios.
Just yesterday a friend brought me a cannoli with pistachio filling. Highly recommended!
