The best weekend afternoons start like this:
Maria: Do you want to have lunch tomorrow?
Me: What kinda lunch?
Maria: Whatever happens to come with the drinks.
It’s very hard to argue with that. So for lunch we went. It lasted from 2pm till 10pm. Interspersed by a street theatre performance on Town Hall Square.
Lucía’s luminous drink
Pimientos de padrón. These are small green peppers, deep-fried, salted, totally addictive.
Toledo Cathedral lit up, and a sea of people waiting for the performance to start.
The performance included several eardrum-busting explosions, which sent clouds of dust and feathers up into the air. This is the back of a giant screen the performers used to project images onto.
Maria in the midst of the feather storm. Either that, or we’re having a bloody good pillow fight…
Ah, those peppers….I always have to ask for them NOT to salt so much or my mouth is salty for days afterwards. 😮
Looks like a lot of fun! 🙂

Yes, I was a bit parched afterwards, I must admit 😉

Sounds like my kind of lunch! I’ve never had deep-fried green peppers. They looked delicious. I’m guessing they were heavily salted to make you drink more 😉
I can’t help but think of the mess of feathers to be cleaned up the next day. That’s me, always worrying about the practical side …

It’s rather windy here this morning. I’m imagining what it would be like in this wind with feathers all over the ground. What an experience that would be!!

Oh, and get this: There were white, red, yellow and blue feathers 🙂

I like the pillow fight notion!
Curious about the performance – who, what, any good?? Or is this one of those things ANYONE in Toledo will already know about. And the rest of us are mere ignoramus??
As for the peppers – yum! Salty? Yes… Just an excuse to quench your thirst with another drink… or was it another.. and another??

I have no idea. I believe it was some French troupe, and the performance was centred around the 4th centenary of El Greco’s death. We’ve had nearly a whole year of it already. Anyway, the event was a bit disappointing.

Two things:
1. an 8 hour lunch sound DIVINE!
2. how unbelievably sweet are you to only have written one post during my self-imposed exile from WP this week??? I have spent the past 2 hours speed-reading through other bloggers’ tomes and then I find this on your site: short, fun and a breezy read! Thank you!

Enjoying may be an overstatement. Perhaps “overwhelmed” would be a more appropriate description. 🙂

Love the atmospheric photos. And the peppers. And that amber drink. And the all-day lunch. Pity the performance was underwhelming but the rest sounds like a damn good day!

Yes it was. There was an alcoholic coffee in there somewhere, and a Nutella-soaked waffle…

I love the picture of María with the feathers. Though the feathers strike me as a smidgen surreal, I guess “surreal” is really what Spain is all about.

Deep fried AND salted peppers? Why didn’t I think of that? What do you recommend drinking to wash it down?

I had white wine with those, but a cool beer will do just nicely 😉

All day drinks and lunch sound amazing…sadly, children tend to put the kibosh on extended drinking sessions 😦

Not in Spain they don’t. People drag their toddlers about at all hours, for any duration. Once they are exhausted from running about and bawling they collapse into their push chairs, until they are ready to go again.

Hi, I didn’t know you could eat green peppers like that, I’ve never seen them on a restaurant menu here, must look out for them. I’m curious to try them.

They are widely available here, it’s a standard menu item.
