Toledo is stuffed to the rafters with treasures that no ordinary pleb has been allowed to set eyes on in hundreds of years. Recently, the tumble-down Colegio de Infantes (a boy’s school) was renovated and reopened as a museum of ancient tapestries and textiles that had been rotting away in one of the Cathedral’s cellars.

I shall spare you the tapestries and ecclesiastical garments, but have a look at this:

    Painted sculptures of the saints always creep me out. They look like toys! Either it’s a sculpture (nice white marble or gray plaster will suffice), or it’s a painting, but not both!

    Oh love the window ‘framed paintings’! There is something oddly haunting about that doorway though… is that a ghostly apparition I see? Or just a reflection of the photographer? Or my eyes playing tricks (we did have to survive TWO wedding receptions last night after all!?!)

    I guess I’m the only one who would have liked a look at the tapestries – my dad sold cloth (“rag peddler” – and not the newspaper kind) – what can I say? Ah well – a Madonna and Child that do look extra cheery, a great fake-out painting – and a link I’m really happy I clicked on. What Gorgeous Photos!

      The tapestries were impressive. Very interesting how the colours had held up over the centuries… in some of them, the blue was extraordinarily luminous while all the other pigments had faded considerably.

    I was stunned by the rooftop photo, then charmed by the virgin! She resembles real girls I have known, cornfed types from Iowa. The kid isn’t as realistic but I like his smile. They both look as though they are about to eat cake 🙂

    well it really does look like a painting – and while I also do not care for “religious art” – you reminded me that there can be value in it – and I do like the gold in that content shot. 🙂 ❤
