Nymphenburg Palace was the summer residence of Bavaria’s rulers, the Wittelsbacher family. The gardens, which are largely woodlands, are enormous and contain, in fact, five palaces, one big one and four teensy ones. Well worth a visit if you happen to be in Munich with an afternoon to spare and a hankering for a dose of nature.
I had a delicious plum crumble, but wolfed it down too fast to take a photo…
Schön.

The park is fantastic – you can walk for hours, and bicycles are banned 🙂 Am not against cycling, but it’s tedious having to watch out for bikes all the time!

*Wow* doesn’t quite sum it up, does it?
It seems that the older I get, the more Socialist I become. All that wealth concentrated with a few is just so wrong.

The level of opulence is stunning. I guess I have my answer to how one can speak of a “teensy” palace.

Haha, two of them were really titchy, but no expense was spared, nonetheless 😉

You don’t think they found it just a bit over the top?

I don’t know, it’s a little small for my taste.

We love these descriptions of German sites and history and should find a way to link them to our German 1&2 travel story courses.

Not too shabby, though the flower garden is so sparse, compared to classic French and English styles…

The flower garden is only a small part of the whole shebang. But I agree, they could have made it more… flowery 😉

Amazing this all belonged to one family!
Is that a gondola on the pond in the first photo?

Yes, a gondola 🙂 You can hire it for going along the canals. Mum and I didn’t really fancy that, though, haha.

If they serve cake on the gondola, I’m in! 🙂

What is the thing on top of the feet? Weird. I can’t look at a big house without thinking of what it takes to clean it. Miseries. That hausfrau was one enterprising woman!

Those things are huge lanterns.
That Hausfrau was a queen with squadrons of servants … hopefully ones more talented at cleaning than I am 😉

What stunning photos of an amazing palace! For some strange reason, I don’t tend to associate opulence like that with Germany, and certainly not Bavaria – it looks like Versailles-level luxury. But that’s just another reminder I need to travel more in Germany!

Hi there! Bavaria is very much like that. Also the churches… totally overwhelming at times 🙂

I like the b&w but prefer the colour version I think. I like the colour of the sand. Someone’s suggestion of sepia might work!
Enjoy Edinburgh, Jo. I hope it is colourful for you!

I absolutely love Schloss Nymphenburg. When I was a child I used to live near there
and we used to walk along the Schlosspark. It brings back so many happy memories.
Beautiful pictures.
