Contemporary Salamanca

Salamanca is an arresting historic city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, and, as you’d expect, replete with ancient buildings oozing with imposing beauty. But the city also has a modern face intermingled with its classic red sandstone glory. I took these pictures while strolling about the old town.

Some funky posters gracing the inside of Salamanca’s 15th-century Casa de las Conchas (Shell House).

Cafe mural

A colourful mural. Not sure what it’s supposed to be… but who cares 😉

Clouds

The shading provided by these moody rainclouds and the angle of the evening sun makes it seem like the street lamps are lit, but they aren’t.

Someone's very intent on keeping folk out. The sign reads "Dangerous dogs, forbidden to touch the fence", followed up by this vivid pictorial representation of a bull being chased through the Tormes river, with Salamanca cathedral serving as the backdrop.

Some place! I HAVE to add this to my must-goes….especially as you recently told me it’s on the FLAT!! No slopes/hills/energy sapping inclines!

FOOD …..of course, how could I not mention that (says she, having just tucked into the most meltingly tender roast lamb, accompanied by Jersey Royals ( a last minute but most essential treat to myself!)

Oh my, you absolutely MUST go to that museum! They don’t allow you to take photos, which is a bummer. There’s an antique doll exhibition in there – the scariest thing I’ve ever seen! This will stay with me forever…

Ooh, eerie lamps – I like that one 😉
And the last mural – someone had a lot of time on their hands! Probably because they never have any visitors 😉

So, of course, I REALLY REALLY want to see what is inside the top secret compound. I imagine some kind of MIssion Impossible assault on the place. Pulling my head out of THAT, the ironwork is stunning. If I ever go to Europe, I must see Spain and take your blog as a tourguide.

Ooooh, there are better blogs for tour guide purposes. Let me know when you’re ready to embark on your Europe tour, and I’ll sort you out with all the links 🙂

So strange to read these posts about Salamanca from the other end of the world — there is a Salamanca Place barely 100 metres from where I live!

I get this comment a lot about my current town of residence, Toledo, of which there’s also one in Ohio. The latter doesn’t seem to have a half-excavated Roman circus, nor a thousand-year-old cathedral 😉

Never been to Australia, would love to visit!
