Salamanca is an arresting historic city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, and, as you’d expect, replete with ancient buildings oozing with imposing beauty. But the city also has a modern face intermingled with its classic red sandstone glory. I took these pictures while strolling about the old town.
A mural above the entrance to an underground car park
Salamanca Catering & Hoteliery School (I think…?)
This lovely piece of wrought ironwork belongs to Casa Lis, the city’s Art Nouveau Museum
Some funky posters gracing the inside of Salamanca’s 15th-century Casa de las Conchas (Shell House).
A colourful mural. Not sure what it’s supposed to be… but who cares 😉
The shading provided by these moody rainclouds and the angle of the evening sun makes it seem like the street lamps are lit, but they aren’t.
Someone’s very intent on keeping folk out. The sign reads “Dangerous dogs, do not touch the fence – a message reinforced by this vivid pictorial representation of a bull being chased through the Tormes river, with Salamanca cathedral serving as the backdrop.
Gorgeous and colorful!

Some place! I HAVE to add this to my must-goes….especially as you recently told me it’s on the FLAT!! No slopes/hills/energy sapping inclines!

And don’t forget THE FOOD. Yum 🙂

FOOD …..of course, how could I not mention that (says she, having just tucked into the most meltingly tender roast lamb, accompanied by Jersey Royals ( a last minute but most essential treat to myself!)

Looks wonderful; I do like a city where old and new mix happily. I have put the Art Nouveau museum on my to do list. Any idea what’s behind the scary gate?

Oh my, you absolutely MUST go to that museum! They don’t allow you to take photos, which is a bummer. There’s an antique doll exhibition in there – the scariest thing I’ve ever seen! This will stay with me forever…

And no, I’ve not clue what’s behind the razor wire…the hound of the Salamancavilles, probably…

Ooh, eerie lamps – I like that one 😉
And the last mural – someone had a lot of time on their hands! Probably because they never have any visitors 😉

You may have to construct yourself a door like that soon…

So, of course, I REALLY REALLY want to see what is inside the top secret compound. I imagine some kind of MIssion Impossible assault on the place. Pulling my head out of THAT, the ironwork is stunning. If I ever go to Europe, I must see Spain and take your blog as a tourguide.

Ooooh, there are better blogs for tour guide purposes. Let me know when you’re ready to embark on your Europe tour, and I’ll sort you out with all the links 🙂

And here, people just post signs that say, Stay out, OR ELSE. Or else what? At least these people are kind enough to erect this mural to let you know what else.

You’ve got a point there… if you have to be mean, at least do it with some imagination! 😉

The second from bottom is just like a well-known Magritte painting! I’ll try to find it.

Great street art, but for me nothing beats modernity as expressed by the astronaut carved into an ancient church’s walls.

I’d definitely like to know who/what’s behind that scary door – they’ve added a cute duck in the foreground so they can’t be that bad!

It could be… as long as you set off early. The train journey takes about 2.5 hours. Worth it, though!

So strange to read these posts about Salamanca from the other end of the world — there is a Salamanca Place barely 100 metres from where I live!

I get this comment a lot about my current town of residence, Toledo, of which there’s also one in Ohio. The latter doesn’t seem to have a half-excavated Roman circus, nor a thousand-year-old cathedral 😉
Never been to Australia, would love to visit!
