Toledo Deserted

Toledo is a city of contrasts – at times bustling with throngs of punters, at other times desolate and devoid of life. This sea of empty metal chairs and tables outside Burger King on the main square caught my eye a couple of days ago, when I was on my way home around 10pm, after leaving a busy restaurant.

Did you spot the McDonald’s “M” reflected in the table in the centre? MD’s is right next door. I’ve never eaten in either fast food joint. They are both heaving with tourists during the day.

Has various meanings… in this case, it’s just a synonym for “people” in general. Although there’s the implication that they’ve turned up for an event or similar.

In Cambridge/Oxford, punters are the people (usually students) who steer/move the boats down the river with those long poles.

well. it was august and hot as hell. but yes. I did. we took the train from madrid and then spend the day. it is a lovely little town, so special. I think you can compare it to the swedish town Visby (without ever being there)

I visited Toledo in Oct 2008 on a day trip from Madrid to El Escorial and then Toledo. Loved the Gothic and Moorish-influenced architecture. The cathedral was fantastic. Can’t say I blame you for not bothering with the fast food places when there is so much deliciousness to be eaten in Spain. .

Well… it’s also quite chilly right now, so people don’t tend to sit outside in the evening, only desperate smokers 😉

Toledo has tourism all year round, not so much in the evenings, though, as many tourists arrive just for a day-trip from Madrid and tend to return by late afternoon.

I had a Burger King in Bremen. Don’t you judge me. 😉 We don’t have it in LV and I had a craving for a Chicken Royale… damn it was good 🙂 Took me a moment or two to see the M – well done!

You’ve never eaten at McDonalds or Burger King?! How is that even possible?! I am not a fan of fast food but even I can devour a Big Mac or Whopper after a feed of drink. McDonalds was great when we were travelling last year for cheap (and good) coffee, clean toilets and free Wifi. Having said all that I’m very happy that BK was empty while people were eating at “proper” restaurants.
